South African police, under Operation Shanela, destroyed drugs valued at R800 million.

Police Commissioner Gen Fanie Masemola highlighted that this marked the third drug destruction operation within a year. These drugs, including cocaine, heroin, mandrax, and marijuana, were confiscated during various policing activities. Notable seizures included one tonne of cocaine worth R400 million linked to the Maydon Wharf case. Additionally, 1.3 tonnes of illegal pharmaceuticals were confiscated. Operation Shanela aims to combat drug dealers, and audits ensure compliance with standards. The police believe that removing these drugs from the streets will positively impact communities, particularly young people who are primary users. Since May, 15,400 suspects have been arrested for drug possession.
