Key Police Appointments in Rivers State Amidst Impeachment Plot

The Nigerian Police Force has appointed Promise Wosu, former Chief Security Officer to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, as the new commander of Special Protection Unit Base 6 in Rivers State. This move followed Wosu's removal as the Chief Security Officer to Governor Siminalayi Fubara, amidst an alleged impeachment plot against the governor.

Additionally, two other loyalists and former aides of the FCT minister have been assigned to lead the Counter Terrorism Unit and 'Operation Sting' in Rivers State. The intention behind these appointments is believed to be an attempt to influence the security infrastructure in favor of the FCT Minister and potentially facilitate Governor Fubara's impeachment.

The political crisis in Rivers State escalated when the State House of Assembly initiated impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara, who had assumed office in May. This action was taken on the grounds of alleged gross misconduct. An incident involving a fire at the assembly complex raised suspicions of an attempt to hinder the impeachment proceedings.

Efforts to resolve the crisis have been made, including a meeting between President Bola Tinubu, Governor Fubara, and Minister Wike.
